  • SWITCH PERSON/CONDUCTOR

    Responsible for rail car switching services on customer sites. These roles can be seen applying handbrakes, securing hoses, throwing switches, and directing rail movements.

  • LOCOMOTIVE OPERATOR/ENGINEER/TRACKMOBILE OPERATOR

    Responsible for the safe operation and movement of our Locomotives and/or Trackmobiles within the customer site. These roles require strong communication skills as they take direction through radio communications.

  • RAILCAR LOADER

    Responsible for providing safe and efficient rail car loading and/or unloading services of various products These roles require attention to processes and knowledge of a variety of goods.

  • RAILCAR REPAIRER

    Responsible for ensuring the railcars used by the customer at the site meet the standards for loading product they perform minor railcar defects and railcar inspections on the rail network. Repairers have welding and mechanical knowledge.

  • TRACKMAN

    Responsible for providing track inspection, maintenance, and clearing services for the railway track for various customer sites. These roles will also be involved in new track builds.

  • TERMINAL OPERATOR

    Responsible for supporting the rail and transload operations, maintenance, and the regulatory compliance for the facility. These roles are multifaceted allowing employees to perform a little bit of everything.

  • LOCOMOTIVE MECHANIC

    Responsible for repairing and servicing various types of locomotives in Cando’s fleet. The work is in field environments and may require travel away from the home for periods of time.

  • OPERATIONS SUPERVISOR

    Responsible for Cando’s day to day and shift by shift operations while ensuring customer commitments are met safely and on time. These roles take on a field level leadership at each of our locations.

All our candidates are asked to submit a resume to the position(s) they desire. Job descriptions for each can be found in the Current Openings section of our Careers page.

Resume Review

Resumes are reviewed by our hiring manager or recruitment team. We look for experience or similar competencies. Those selected for an interview are contacted by phone.

Interviews & Assessment

Interviews/Assessments are booked with our hiring manager and a Cando team member. Our interviewers explain the role and ask some behavioural-based questions.

Offer

Top candidates will receive a phone call from the hiring manager or recruitment team regarding the offer. Written offer letters outline the position type, conditions, wage, and benefits.

Medical/D&A Testing/Backgrounds

Most of our positions require a railway safety critical medical clearance and/or drug and alcohol testing. Some roles also require background and criminal record checks.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • Do I have to submit a resume?

    Yes, please submit your resume to the job that you feel you are best suited. This allows the hiring manager to gain an understanding of your experience and education.

  • Can I email my resume to someone?

    We prefer all our candidates to apply online to the role they desire. This ensures your resume is reviewed by the hiring manager.

  • When should I expect a call back letting me know if I will receive a job offer?

    A response for the outcome of all interviews is typically completed 5-10 days after the interview. The interviewers will advise you of their timeframe during the interview process.

  • If I am not selected, will I be notified?

    Yes, we contact all our candidates who are interviewed.

  • If I am not successful for the position, will you keep my resume on file?

    At times, we do not have enough vacancies to accept all the great candidates. If you are not successful the first time, we encourage you to continue applying.

  • Is medical screening part of the process?

    Yes, the majority of Cando’s rail related positions require clearance for the employee to work in a safety critical position and clear drug and alcohol testing. Cando uses a third party medical provider to assist in the completions of the medicals. All medical information is reviewed by Cando’s Chief Medical Officer.

  • Can I work with Cando if I have a criminal record?

    Some customer sites require employees participate in criminal background checks to access their property. We only do background checks for customers requiring the clearance.

  • Do Cando’s Drug & Alcohol tests screen for marijuana?

    Yes. Cando expects all employees to report and remain fit for duty, free of alcohol and drugs known to cause impairment and/or reduced cognitive function. THC/cannabinoids present during a test will produce a positive result preventing your application from continuing in the selection process.

  • What is the general work schedule?

    Schedules will vary from site to site but, generally speaking, Cando employees work twelve (12) hour shifts with either a 4 on, 4 off schedule or a continental schedule. All employees will rotate through day and night shifts at locations that require 24-hour service.
