The Central Manitoba Railway (CEMR)

Background

The Central Manitoba Railway (CEMR), which is owned and operated by Cando, is a 67-mile short line running from East Selkirk north of Winnipeg to Carman south of Winnipeg and serving 20+ transportation customers.

Operations

The short line, which was established by Cando in 1999 with the acquisition of CN’s Pine Falls and Carman subdivisions, services a variety of industrial customers with the main commodities being grain, fertilizers, paper, fuel, steel products and chemicals. CEMR interchanges daily in Winnipeg with CN in Symington Yard and CP at Transcona Yard, maintaining close working relationships with both mainline railway partners. CEMR provides switching service and on line operations on a daily basis, 24 hours a day, and has its own team of engineering experts to maintain, repair and replace its track. CEMR’s MOW team offers ditching, snow removal and servicing repairs to both main line and industrial operations.

CEMR operates out of Cando’s Winnipeg Terminal located in North Transcona. Cando Winnipeg Terminal has offices, a transload facility, a railcar storage yard, and houses Cando’s railcar and locomotive repair shop.
