Cando Rail & Terminals to Unveil Canada’s First Battery-Powered Switching Locomotive

Southlands Terminal, Edmonton, AB – September 10, 2025

We are proud to announce that we will officially unveil Canada’s first battery-powered switching locomotive at our Southlands Terminal in Edmonton on September 10, 2025. This project will mark a major step forward in sustainable rail operations and industrial decarbonization in Canada.

The unveiling will include two sessions:

Morning (10:00 AM – 12:00 PM): A ceremony with government officials and project partners in attendance to mark the official reveal.

Afternoon (1:00 PM – 3:30 PM): A customer-focused session with demonstrations and engagement opportunities.

Our new locomotive, retrofitted from a traditional diesel unit, is fully electric and zero-emission. Purpose-built for industrial and closed-loop switching operations, it eliminates harmful emissions, reduces noise, cuts energy costs, and supports Canada’s net-zero climate goals.

Funding from the Government of Alberta through Emissions Reduction Alberta (ERA) played a critical role in making this project possible. This industry-transforming initiative drastically reduces greenhouse gas emissions and allows Cando to help industrial companies moving product by rail achieve their sustainability goals more quickly.

“This project reflects our continued commitment to safety, innovation, and environmental leadership,” said Paul Duncan, Chief Operating Officer for Cando. “By investing in battery-powered technology, we will be reducing emissions in our operations while creating a scalable solution for cold weather climates that can transform industrial rail switching operations across our network.”

Our initiative, Li-Ion 2025, has already received strong support from ERA, our industry partners, and our valued customers. With phase one of field testing completed in Winnipeg earlier this year, the Southlands Terminal unveiling is the next milestone in bringing this project to life. After the unveiling, Cando will continue to test the battery locomotive in the real-world switching environment at Southlands Terminal, and finalize commercialization plans in early 2026.
